Well, I had to feed the minds of all of the readers again with a bit more insight on the lyrical forefront, this time from a lyrical soldier who goes by the name
Sun Rise Above, or also known as Sun R.A.. This kat has brought that true lyrical flava of hip hop to the forefront, proving that hip hop is NOT dead, but that it resides strongly in the hearts of kats like Sun R.A. and others who still respect and appreciate the lyrical form that hip hop was birthed to be. You know I def give props whenever I hear kats that bring that lyrical flava especially when it reminds me of some of the greats of the 90's that influenced me to begin with, and Sun R.A. definitely brings that flava in my opinion!
But then it's no surprise though. Sun R.A. has been spitting lyrical infernos in the underground for some years now, another sign that shows he's still about the game, and about the flava and soul of hip hop, rather than changing up the persona to sound like everyone else who're busy trying to make money only in this industry and willing to convert their signature and style.
Sun has been in the hip hop game for some years now, and really broke through in 2003 with his bangin' hit album "
Global Warning". He had the underground shook, and the fans kept growing with demand that he put out more music! He had my mind shook as well when I had the chance to listen to the music off of the Global Warning album. His flow reminds me a little bit of the Wu-Tang Clan style of music but with his own signature taste to it. The "Out of the Darkness" track on the album is bangin' and has a nice flava to it with the guitar background off the beat as well. Overall, the "Global Warning" album is bangin' and you gotta catch a listen or two, especially if you appreciate the 90's flava and lyrical hip hop!
In 2005, Sun continued forward with his "
hiphoproganda" style of leftist political based hip hop flava and has Paris sign him to his Guerrilla Funk imprint. Of course, with the presence that Sun R.A. already built from his earlier work, needless to say this project took off like fire as well! He continued to gain notability and was featured on the track "Throwyahandzup" with Dead Prez and T-K.A.S.H. on the "Paris Presents: Hard Truth Soldiers Vol. 1" album. This gained more momentum for Sun as well and the fanbase continued to grow with his witty, crafty lyrical skills.
Sun R.A. continued pushing forward and released his solo album, "Prisoners of War" which was released independently in 2009 and gained exposure and further fanbase as well! The Prisoners of War track is pretty bangin' and I had to listen to it a few times because it really drew me in as well. This kat is really crafty at his lyrics, and with my being a beatmaker/producer from NYC and having the 90's hip hop flava as my main influence as you all know already, kats like Sun and his type of lyrical flow really draw me in!
This kat is also dedicated to bringing out music that he enjoys making, which to me is an artist after my own heart and soul for hip hop. That was evident when he released the albums, "
Every Day I Wake Up On The Wrong Side of Capitalism" and "
Still Prisoners of War" recently in 2011. Both albums brought about more fanbase on the underground end.
Despite the lack of commercial appeal and mainstream attention, Sun R.A. continues to receive press and coverage on the underground and even more so, internationally. I know all of you kats out there who listen to hip hop know that for some reason, other countries out there are still bumpin' that flava of the 90's and styles like it more so than the commercial mainstream flava... so where did we go wrong in dismissing hip hop altogether? I know I know, it's just me. I'm speaking passionately again about my era of hip hop, forgive me.
But yes indeed, if you are looking for that "funk up your mind" with skillful crafty lyrical flava, then you gotta visit Sun R.A.'s music page as well. Sit back, take a moment, absorb the lyrics this man's spittin' about, and let it enter your mindset. Before the end of the day, you may have forgotten about the mainstream flava, and wonder why this type of flava disappeared to begin with! Listen to Sun R.A.'s music on his official site at
